January is recognized nationally as Ski Safety Awareness Month, when ski areas and industry partners promote responsible skiing and riding. The annual observance highlights the importance of awareness, visibility and proper equipment as conditions change throughout the winter season, a Jan. 13 press release from Christy Sports explained.
Ski Safety Awareness Month encourages skiers and riders to review the National Ski Areas Association’s “Your Responsibility Code,” which outlines guidelines such as staying in control, yielding to downhill traffic and obeying posted signage.
Variable snow conditions, changing light and busy trails can increase risk on familiar terrain, making clear vision and properly functioning equipment important for maintaining control. Industry officials note that modern helmet and goggle systems are designed to improve visibility and impact protection, particularly in variable conditions.
“Most incidents don’t happen on extreme terrain,” said Randy England, director of program management and marketing operations at Christy Sports. “They often happen on familiar runs, where awareness and decision-making matter most. Conditions can change quickly, and clear vision and properly fitted protective gear help skiers and riders stay in control and react appropriately.”
Safety advocates also remind skiers and riders that helmets should be replaced if they are outdated or have sustained impacts, and to visit the National Ski Areas Association’s Your Responsibility Code guidelines, which outline 10 core guidelines for skier and rider safety.
