On Saturday, Nov. 29, a skier triggered an avalanche along the north side of the Bridger Mountains. The skier was caught and carried, deployed their airbag and stopped on the surface of the debris, according to a report by the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center. They were able to dig themselves out with no reported injuries.

The avalanche was one of “several slides” that were reported since the snow storm following the Thanksgiving holiday, a GNFAC social media post noted. Recent reports can be found on GNFAC’s website. According to a Dec. 1 avalanche forecast, the main concern right now is wind slabs, as well as buried and persistent weak layers up high.
“Before riding slopes steeper than 30 degrees, look for slopes sheltered from the wind, and dig and probe around to check the depth of the snowpack and assess for potential weak layers,” the DATE forecast report stated.
