Skiing for dummies at Big Sky Resort

BIG SKY – Skiing for Dummies isn’t just a book, it’s a yearly event at Big Sky Resort. The 12th annual Dummy Jump is Saturday, Feb. 21, when participants build a dummy to be launched off a ski jump high into the air, and crowds witness the carnage of the landing.

Teams are encouraged to design and build a dummy competitor that will ski in a straight line and launch off a jump to their demise. Contestants must design their dummies with modesty in mind for the younger audience in attendance, and leave no trace after the cleanup. Successful dummies have balance, a low center of gravity and straight, long skis. The better a dummy self-destructs on impact, the better chance of winning.

Dummies will be judged and awarded on creativity, amplitude, structure and destruction on impact. Additional awards will be for MVP and “Biggest Accuracy in America” – or hitting the bull’s eye in the landing zone. The grand prize is $500 cash with other prizes for various categories.

The dummy launches will begin at 2:30 p.m. on the Ambush headwall with spectators and judges at the bottom of Ambush, near the base area. Each dummy is allowed one run.

Free dummy registration is currently available online and closes at 11 a.m. on Feb. 20. Registration on the day of the event will be accepted by the Summit Clock Tower from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. An awards ceremony will immediately follow the event, with an after party sponsored by Dos Equis at Whiskey Jack’s.
