A 21-year-old snowmobiler from Minnesota was killed in an avalanche in the Centennial Mountains near Island Park, according to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center and Clark County authorities.
Clark County Sheriff Mark McClure identified the victim as Landon Fox. The avalanche occurred around 2 p.m. on Feb. 22, just north of the Keg Springs trailhead in the Carrot Canyon area. Fox was riding with his father, brother and a family friend when the slide was triggered by another uphill snowmobile.
Three of the four riders were caught and carried; two were partially buried and survived, while Fox was completely buried. Multiple agencies from Fremont, Madison and Gallatin counties assisted in the response. The fatality is the first reported avalanche death in Idaho since December 2024 and the 19th in the U.S. this season.
The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has rated avalanche danger as “Considerable” for the Island Park region, and the Bridger and Gallatin ranges. Forecasters warn that recent snowfall and drifting winds have overloaded persistent weak layers making avalanches easy to trigger. A full avalanche report is available on their website.
