A snowmobiler was seriously injured Saturday afternoon after striking a tree on the Lionhead Trail, about eight miles west of West Yellowstone.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. on Jan. 25. Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue volunteers from the West Yellowstone team, along with Hebgen Basin Rural Fire District, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the Custer Gallatin National Forest, and Gallatin County Sheriff’s deputies, responded to the scene.

Rescuers used snowmobiles and a towed snowbulance to reach the injured rider, provided initial medical care and transported the patient to a landing zone. Due to the severity of the injuries, the snowmobiler was airlifted to East Idaho Regional Medical Center for treatment.

In a news release from Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Sheriff Dan Springer reminded snowmobilers to ride within their skill level, noting that many tree strikes are caused by excessive speed, poor visibility and changing snow conditions.
