EBS STAFF
While autumn hangs on, putting on a show of brilliant orange and yellow foliage, this weekend may see a new splash of color in some areas of southwest Montana with snow in the forecast.
Weather will start to move in tonight, Oct. 2, with wind gusts up to 20 MPH, and a 40% chance of precipitation in Big Sky. By Saturday, the chance of precipitation will increase to 90% followed by snow flurries with a low temperature of 29F. According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Big Sky from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon, meaning that there is at least a 50% chance of impactful winter weather conditions during the watch period.
By Sunday, snow is likely before 9 a.m. with accumulation projections around one inch in lower elevations, and two to seven inches above 6,000 feet including the Madison, Gallatin and Centennial ranges. Bozeman will see a 60% chance of precipitation with a low of 35F and high of 43F. The Wyoming Department of Transportation noted on social media that U.S. Highway 212, or Beartooth Highway, will close Friday, Oct. 3, at noon as they evaluate road conditions during and after the storm.
