Tinworks Art, a nonprofit art space in Bozeman, announced its 2024 exhibition season, “Lay of the Land.” The display will feature works by an intergenerational group of artists: Agnes Denes, Lucy Raven, Stephen Shore, Layli Long Soldier, Robbie Wing, James Castle and artist-in-residence Wills Brewer.
Opening on June 15, “Lay of the Land” will showcase art inspired by the western U.S. and will explore how the region is represented. “The artworks included connect to land and place through their physical materiality—wheat, sediment, soot, clay, the sound of passing trains … the natural or industrial forces that have shaped the land of the west and depictions of western places shaped by memory or technology,” a release from Tinworks Art stated.
A major piece in the exhibition is Denes’ new work, “Wheatfield—An Inspiration. The seed is in the ground,” in which she has repurposed land to cultivate a wheat field that will be harvested, turned into flour and used at Wild Crumb Bakery in Bozeman.
The release also listed the following public events for the summer:
- Roots in the Sky, July 6 and 7.
- Isabel Shaida, July 13 through September 4.
- “Stories under the Land” from Montana InSite Theater, September 21 and 22.
- Family and Community Programming, June 15 through October 19.
