Former Montana State University quarterback Tommy Mellott, whom the Las Vegas Raiders drafted in the sixth round of the 2025 National Football League draft, was waived Aug. 26 by his first NFL team at the end of NFL preseason as rosters slimmed to 53 players. He was signed Monday, Sept. 1 to the practice squad of the New Orleans Saints, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Ahead of the NFL draft, Mellott earned the nickname “Prospect X” as a lesser-known star of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. After spending his Bobcat career as a dual-threat quarterback, Mellott converted to wide receiver. He had two catches for one yard in three preseason games with Las Vegas.
Now in New Orleans, his versatility has earned him comparisons to Saints’ utility threat Taysom Hill, according to various sources including The New Orleans Advocate.
Hill, now 35 years old, has spent his nine-year NFL career lining up at QB and tight end.
“Many teams have tried to replicate the success the New Orleans Saints found with versatile offensive weapon Taysom Hill,” wrote Ross Jackson of LousianaSports.net, noting that New Orleans could be the right place for a versatile player like Mellott to shine. “Could it be that the Saints will beat everyone to the punch?”
Reports Tuesday, Sept. 2 indicated that Mellott will continue learning to play quarterback, although he’ll have quarterback experience in his back pocket as he continues to navigate his road to the NFL gridiron.
