BIG SKY – The Warren Miller Performing Arts Center kicks off its free speaker series tonight at 7:30 in Big Sky.
The series showcases three speakers, a short film and music during an evening sponsored by HATCH, “a community, movement, and a series of experiences designed to activate creativity to HATCH a better world,” according to its website.
The evening features keynote speaker Phillip Sheppard, the award-winning composer who has scored more than 25 films, been featured at Sundance Film Festival and recorded arrangements for the national anthems of 205 countries at the 2012 summer Olympics.
HATCH will also include speakers Paul Miller aka “DJ Spooky,” and Navneet Narula. Miller is a National Graphic Emerging Explorer and an artist in residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and Narula is an award-winning innovator and cofounder of iScuela, the world’s first 3D interactive education platform.
The series continues on Friday, Oct. 24 with Montana State University professor Shane Doyle, a Crow Indian and founder of Native Nexus, a company that helps implement Indian Education for All in Montana. The final speaker of the fall season on Friday, Nov. 14, will be Arthur Benjamin, a mathematics professor at Harvey Mudd College and creator of the television show Mathemagics.
All of the talks are free to the public and reserved seats can be purchased in advance at warrenmillerpac.org. The series is underwritten by the Big Sky School District’s Adult Education, which exists to educate adults in the Big Sky School District.
Two more free talks are planned for May, and WMPAC Artistic Director John Zirkle is taking suggestions for speakers at jzirkle@bssd72.org.

Event Details
My Barking Dog is a nightmare comedy that tells the story of Toby and Melinda, two lonely people whose lives are forever changed the night they encounter a starving coyote at their apartment building. Over time they grow to expect him, leaving ritual offerings to entice the coyote every night. Toby and Melinda forge a connection over this visitor and share curiosity and concern about his presence in the city. The coyote expands their world–until, one night, their world is shattered. Their lives are pushed suddenly into uncharted territory, sending them on a surreal odyssey that changes their city–and the world–forever.
