Overnight into the morning of July 4, a “significant law enforcement incident” took place at Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park, according to a press release from the park.

Rangers responded to a report that an armed individual was making threats, and when rangers arrived on scene to contact the individual, both parties exchanged gunfire.

Since July 4, there has been no active threat to the public related to the shooting, but an area around the Canyon Lodge complex has been closed for investigation being led by the FBI and special agents with the National Park Service. The subject is deceased, and their identity has not been released.

“One Yellowstone law enforcement park ranger was injured. They are in stable condition and being treated at a nearby regional hospital,” the release stated.
