Yellowstone National Park is finalizing plans for the permanent reconstruction of North Entrance Road, which was partially destroyed in the 500-year flood event on June 13, 2022, specifically sections between Mammoth Hot Springs, Gardiner and Tower Junction. In addition to being a major thoroughfare for visitors to the park, the road also provides year-round access between Gardiner, Cooke City and Silver Gate. The temporary road, in use since Oct. 30, 2022, is not engineered for long-term use.
The National Park Service in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration is seeking public input on an environmental assessment for the road’s reconstruction through a series of public and virtual meetings. At each, NPS and FHWA staff will present three preliminary road alignment alternatives, including a video fly-over of the preferred alignment, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The in-person meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Yellowstone Forever Institute Conference Room, 308 Park Street, Gardiner. The virtual meeting will take place Jan. 14, from 1-2:30 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. Attendees can join the meeting live, or watch a recording after on YouTube.
Public comment is open for 30 days and can be submitted online or mailed to: Yellowstone Center for Resources, Attn: North Entrance Road EA, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190. At the conclusion of the 30-day public comment period on Feb. 4, NPS will review all comments and a final decision will be made in spring 2026.
