Hunters in Southwest Montana fared better during the fifth weekend of the general season according to game-check station reporting. Harvest picked up overall, albeit only slightly in some areas, thanks to recent snowfall and elk movement. Hunter numbers were up about 24 percent and success was also 4.5 percent higher over the week prior.
Almost 11 percent of the 1862 hunters that passed though Fish, Wildlife and Parks game-check stations in Region Three harvested an animal. In total, 28 white-tailed deer were taken (the majority out of Livingston), 69 mule deer (the highest number out of Silver City), and 102 elk (the most coming through Cameron).
FWP reminds hunters that they must stop at all check stations they pass on their way to and from hunting. The general rifle season for deer and elk runs through November 27. visitfwp.mt.gov/hunting.
