Dorothy Hinshaw-Patent to visit Big Sky Community Library
Published
11 years agoon
While author Dorothy Hinshaw-Patent has primarily focused on writing nonfiction books for children, she also has published work in other genres, including travel articles and gardening books for adults.
The author, whose career spans 35 years, will speak at the Big Sky Community Library on May 15 at 7 p.m. Called “Adventures of a Restless Writer,” the program is sponsored by Friends of the Library and will feature a PowerPoint slide presentation in which Hinshaw-Patent tells her life’s story starting as a tomboy naturalist through her adventures as a writer.
Her passion for research has taken her from the Canadian Arctic to the equatorial Galapagos Islands and from the amazing prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux, France to the fabulous terra cotta warriors guarding the tomb of the first emperor of China.
In addition to being an author, Hinshaw-Patent has been a featured speaker at many conferences and schools and has taught basic skills workshops on writing for children.
She has also presented writing sessions on freeing the creative spirit from the restraints of the internal critic. As a consultant, she enjoys working with less experienced writers, helping them hone their work to make it more publishable.
Hinshaw-Patent is also involved in an exciting new endeavor, Ink Think Tank, LLC, a company formed to help teachers and librarians use nonfiction trade books in the classroom. The data base available without cost at InkThinkTank.com shows how the nonfiction books of two dozen award-winning nonfiction authors can help meet the curriculum standards of America’s schools.
Megan Paulson is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Outlaw Partners.

Event Details
My Barking Dog is a nightmare comedy that tells the story of Toby and Melinda, two lonely people whose lives are forever changed the night they encounter a starving coyote at their apartment building. Over time they grow to expect him, leaving ritual offerings to entice the coyote every night. Toby and Melinda forge a connection over this visitor and share curiosity and concern about his presence in the city. The coyote expands their world–until, one night, their world is shattered. Their lives are pushed suddenly into uncharted territory, sending them on a surreal odyssey that changes their city–and the world–forever.
