Wilderness and …… Stocking Lakes–Is Something Fishy Going On?

“Wilderness and …… Stocking Lakes–Is Something Fishy Going On?” will be presented Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Emerson Center’s Weaver room in Bozeman. Jonathan Klein, Resource Specialist with the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, will be the featured speaker at this program sponsored by the Madison-Gallatin Chapter of the Montana Wilderness Association.

Many historically fishless lakes within designated Wilderness continue to be stocked by state fish and game agencies in order to create opportunities for recreational fishing. This practice is controversial because stocking programs can compromise ecological and social values of Wilderness.

Stocking is commonly accomplished without adequate consultation and cooperation between state and federal land managers. A better understanding of wilderness impacts from fish stocking, as well as improved cooperation between agencies, may help to balance opportunities for recreational fishing with wilderness values. This program should be a great interest to all users of the backcountry in our National Forests.
