LONE PEAK HIGH SCHOOL

BIG SKY – The Big Sky School District #72 Board of Trustees and Supt. Jerry House have approved the addition of two varsity sports.

Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, Lone Peak High School will sponsor wrestling and girls’ tennis for the first time. The Montana High School Association placed LPHS wrestling in the Southern B-C Division along with Belt, Townsend, Cascade/Simms, Choteau/Augusta, Columbus/Absarokee, Fairfield/Power, Fort Benton, Boulder, and Whitehall.

The LPHS girls’ tennis team will participate in the Southeast B-C Division along with Townsend, Boulder, and Whitehall. The addition of wrestling and girls’ tennis brings the total number of varsity-sponsored sports at LPHS to eight. A total of 59 students were enrolled in the high school last school year, and school officials expect that number to grow to 80 this year.

“It’s our goal as an athletic department and school district to provide a comprehensive athletics program for our students as we continue to grow,” said LPHS Athletic Director Tony Beardsley, noting that in addition to the new sports, the high school offers six-man football, volleyball, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, and boys’ and girls’ golf. “The addition of wrestling and girls’ tennis at Lone Peak High School is the beginning of something that we feel gives our students more athletic opportunities to compete and succeed.”

Beardsley named former Bozeman High School assistant wrestling coach Marshall Carpenter as LPHS’ first head wrestling coach.

At Bozeman High, Marshall garnered two Class AA state championship titles, was a national All-American, a four-time Academic All-State selection and went on to wrestle at the University of Michigan in 2010-11.

“Marshall brings energy and a strong desire to help the students he coaches succeed, along with an outstanding wrestling background,” Beardsley said. “We’re excited … to have Marshall establish what will be a great addition to our athletics program.”
