Gifts due Dec. 11, with dozens of contributors still needed

Big Sky Rotary Club’s annual Giving Tree fundraiser is underway, allowing residents and visitors to fulfill the holiday wish of a local child in need. As of Dec. 2, dozens of tags still await the gracious community members who will fulfill each wish.

Local kids can anonymously request a gift worth up to $100, and their wish becomes an “angel tag” hung on the tree, located at Big Sky’s USPS post office.

“More than just a festive display, the Giving Tree is a powerful symbol of generosity, compassion, and the shared commitment to making sure every child in our community feels the magic of the holidays,” Melissa Alger, who volunteers on the Rotary-led committee in charge of the annual tradition, wrote in an email to EBS. “… Please join us for this great holiday tradition by buying a gift for a child in need.”

In 2024, the effort supported eight local families and 40 kids. Gift donations must be made by Dec. 11, and can be dropped off at American Bank and First Security Bank. Supporters are welcome to fulfill more than one gift tag if they are able.

The Giving Tree Committee works with local schools and the Big Sky Community Food Bank, inviting families in need to fill out wish lists or “Santa letters” processed by the Giving Tree committee. In recent years, the application became available in Spanish, which led to increased participation.

In addition to toys and other gifts requested by kids, participating families also receive gift cards for gas and groceries, and a gingerbread house kit for the family to build together. Kids receive stockings with a pair of winter gloves, a winter hat, an age-appropriate toy and some candy.

“The Big Sky Giving Tree program was created to ensure that local children—especially those from families experiencing financial challenges—receive gifts and essentials during the holiday season,” Alger wrote.

To complete the annual tradition, volunteers are encouraged to attend the annual wrapping party on Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. at The Wilson Hotel. Gifts will then be delivered to local families.
