HELENA — Gov. Brian Schweitzer is on the list of potential speakers for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. this week. Schweitzer may speak either Wednesday or Thursday, according to his office.

The governor told the Associated Press he would like to “attract attention to Montana by talking about its low taxes, state government surplus, and what a great place it is to live and invest.”

The governor this week also participated in interviews on MSNBC, CNN, Fox News and PBS Newshour.

He told MSNBS on Hardball with Chris Matthews, “On the very first day in office, the Republicans said ‘the way we beat [President Obama] in reelection is we say to America, ‘We’re not going to work with him, we’re not going to do anything, we wanna shut this country down’.’ And they have… It’s time we hold these leaders in Congress accountable. They are the one’s who have said ‘no’.”

Montana’s first Democratic Governor in 20 years, Schweitzer has a 57 percent approval rating. He has been a champion of growing Montana as an energy state – alternative energy, coal and the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Schweitzer spoke at the 2008 DNC in Denver, Colo. and has since been an outspoken supporter of President Barack Obama.

At the end of his second term, Schweitzer has denied plans to run for president in 2016; however, the AP reported he plans to have breakfast meetings with delegates from key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

The 2012 convention kicked off Sept. 4 and will run through Sept. 6.
