Just after 6:15 a.m. on Dec. 11, a suspect in custody of Montana Highway Patrol fled on foot near mile marker 63 in Gallatin Canyon. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist in the search, using a K9 unit and drones to attempt to track and locate the subject.
The subject was wanted for a non-violent misdemeanor and “had been arrested but fled on foot,” according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Search efforts were called off by 10 a.m. due to dangerous terrain and weather conditions but the release stated that there may still be law enforcement presence in the area. Mile Marker 63 is near the Lava Lake trailhead.
In a statement, Montana Highway Patrol emphasized there is no threat to the public and that the suspect was “cleared of weapons” prior to being taken into custody. Authorities are not releasing the suspect’s identity at this time, but describe the individual as a “hispanic male last seen wearing a white sweatshirt and black pants,” according to the statement.
Authorities continue to investigate and ask citizens to report any suspicious activity near mile marker 63 to Gallatin County Dispatch.
