U.S. Highway 22 over Teton Pass is closed to traffic in both directions following avalanche mitigation work, the Wyoming Department of Transportation announced in a Dec. 22 press release. The closure was scheduled starting at 3 a.m. Dec. 22; the summit parking lot closed to cars starting at 8 p.m.

“Early this morning, WYDOT crews brought down a large, controlled avalanche at Glory Bowl during their mitigation mission,” WYDOT posted on their Facebook page. The debris is currently covering both lanes. The pass is closed between Wilson and the Idaho state line with a projected reopening “between noon and 2 p.m.” tomorrow, Dec. 23, the post stated.

According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, the avalanche forecast is considerable in the Bridger, Madison and Gallatin ranges, and high in the Lionhead, Island Park and Cooke City areas. GNFAC forecasters warn that heavy, wet snow will “stress weak, old, faceted snow near the ground and make big avalanches.”
