Bozeman Deaconess ranks among nation’s safest hospitals

BOZEMAN – Bozeman Deaconess Health Services made the honor roll this year.

The hospital scored an “A” in Hospital Safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

With guidance from a panel of experts, the score uses 26 measures of publically available data to produce a “Hospital Safety Score” representing a hospital’s capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The scores take into account patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D or F for safety.

Leapfrog’s nine-member panel includes patient and hospital safety experts from Harvard and Stanford and is independently operated.

Overall, Montana ranked 16th for safest hospitals in the U.S. Out of the 10 Montana hospitals scored, Billings Clinic, Health Center Northwest in Kalispell and Bozeman Deaconess Hospital all received an “A.”

The Hospital Safety Score website, hospitalsafetyscore.org, also provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay.
