Cabinets of Curiosity, a free and immersive art exhibit, will open March 23 to the public at Bozeman’s Story Mansion. Hosted by Random Acts of Silliness, the art experience brings visitors into the fictional world of the “Raven Eye’s Society,” a club that collects fantastical and magical objects, and displays them.
Visitors can explore the mansion, interact with collections on the cabinets and solve a riddle along the way.
“Rather than being told to keep their hands to themselves, visitors—we’re anticipating over 10,000—are encouraged to interact with the collections. They are also invited to pretend together that we live in a world where magic exists,” Anna Visscher, chief shenanigans officer at Random Acts of Silliness stated in a press release.
The idea of Cabinets of Curiosity comes from a fad that started in the 16th century. Well-traveled people would display objects they found during their trips.
“Rather than real collections, the objects in these cabinets of curiosity were created by talented Montana artists: Amy Ho, Christine Martin, Deva Gallagher, Marla Goodman and David DiGiacomo, Kelly Hartman, Sarah Washko, Kirsten Kainz, and Steve and Cedar Allison-Bunnell,” the release stated.
The art experience will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until April 14. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Saturday having extended hours until 7 p.m. No reservations are required.
“This installation is presented in partnership with Bozeman Parks and Recreation and the Friends of the Story Mansion. It is free for our community to enjoy thanks to generous support from sponsors Peace Design and an anonymous donor,” the release stated. More information is available on the exhibit website.
