Fire update: Gallatin National Forest

Battle Fire(Bozeman Ranger District)– The lightning caused fire that was reported on Friday is now 100 percent contained. Crews made good head way snuffing any remaining smokes and heat with in the fire area. Forest personnel will continue to monitor and patrol the area.

Bull Fire (Gardiner Ranger District) – This resource benefit fire located in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is 190 acres in size and is being monitored by four on-the-ground fire fighters. The fire remains active but showed no increase in size Monday.

Contact Fire (Gardiner Ranger District) – This lightning caused fire remains in monitor status. Crews reported no visible smoke today. Fire is less than .1 acre.

NEW FIRES as of Monday Aug. 15

North Cottonwood Fire (Bozeman Ranger District) – Early Monday morning smoke was reported on the west side of the Bridger Mountains 15 miles north of Bozeman. Smokejumpers were dispatched to the fire in the North Cottonwood Creek drainage. The fire is less than .1 of an acre and fire fighters finishing digging line around the lightning caused fire.

Dome Fire (Gardiner Ranger District) – The 1/4 acre lightning fire was reported this morning on Dome Mountain north west of Gardiner. Crews worked most of the day and reported the fire 100 percent contained by late afternoon.

Cave Creek (Bozeman Ranger District) – This fire is located on the west side of the Gallatin Canyon south of Hell Roaring Trail and roughly 1.5 miles north of Lava Lake and just outside of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. It was reported just before 1pm today. The estimated size is roughly 1/2 acre, burning in a steep timbered area. Fire fighters will be sent in Tuesday morning, due to severe thunderstorms in the area Monday afternoon. It appears that rain may also have fallen on the fire.
