Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seek volunteers for Greater Yellowstone Area Volunteer Day

Several southwest Montana locations are seeking volunteers to help with National Public Lands Day activities.

Gardiner:
Volunteers are needed to help with the Sunlight Trail Facelift on Saturday, Sept. 24. Work consists of reconstructing the trailhead bulletin board, trail tread work and shrubbing, and removing noxious weeds. The trail is located approximately 20 miles northwest of Gardiner. Volunteers for the Gardiner project should contact JoLynn Sharrow to sign up or receive more information. (406) 848-7375 ext. 25 or jsharrow@fs.fed.us. Volunteers receive a coupon good for a future day of free entry to federal public lands that charge entrance fees.

West Yellowstone:

Volunteers are needed to help complete about three miles of new Rendezvous Ski trails on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011. Work consists of hand piling slash and pruning limbs and stacking firewood, installing new signs and sign posts, biathlon improvements, and installing wooden rail fences, ski racks and benches. Volunteers for the West Yellowstone project should contact Todd Stiles to sign up or receive more information. (406) 823-6985 or tstiles01@fs.fed.us. Volunteers who work the full day (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) will be eligible to receive a free 2012 season’s pass for the Rendezvous Ski Trails.

Ennis/McAllister:

Volunteers are needed to relocate approximately 1/2 mile of the Baldwin Park Trail in the Tobacco Root Mountains on Saturday, Sept. 24. Trail work includes clearing and maintaining the entire four mile length of the trail. Volunteers should contact Jonathan Klein to sign up or receive more information. (406) 682-4253 or jklein@fs.fed.us. Volunteers are encouraged to meet in McAllister at 9 a.m. to carpool to the trailhead, and then volunteers will hike four miles into the work site. Volunteers receive a coupon good for a future day of free entry to federal public lands that charge entrance fees.

Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Centennial Valley:

Ten volunteers are needed to help with fence removal and fence modification to help wildlife movement on Wed., Sept. 21. The project is 45 miles west of West Yellowstone or 92 miles southeast of Dillon. Volunteers for the Red Rock Lakes project should contact Suzanne Beauchaine to sign up or receive more information.
