On July 18, a spot fire broke out on Levinski Ridge in the Gallatin Canyon, east of U.S. 191 in Big Sky. The fire was one quarter of an acre in size and caused by lightning.
Small crews from the Bozeman Ranger District and Custer Gallatin National Forest quickly responded with a Type 3 helicopter, dumping 17 buckets through the night, and another 14 buckets the following day. According to a social media post, the fire was stabilized and fully contained on July 21 as crews engaged in mop-up operations—U.S. Forest Service declared the fire fully controlled on July 22.
“We extend sincere appreciation to our local partners, including the Big Sky Fire Department for their initial report and ongoing coordination, Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office for traffic support on Highway 191, and community members who helped share timely public updates. Their collaboration helped ensure a swift and safe response,” a USFS spokesperson stated in a July 25 email to EBS.
The Forest Service encourages citizens to stay vigilant, and report any signs of smoke to 911.
“Custer Gallatin National Forest—and public lands across Montana—are now in fire season,” the spokesperson added. “Please extinguish campfires completely, follow posted fire restrictions, and help protect our forests and communities.”
