According to a Nov. 27 release from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, biologists will conduct field work to determine the population and density of mountain lions in the Gallatin Range south of Bozeman.

“The research is scheduled to begin in early December and last through mid-April as part of a statewide effort to monitor and manage Montana’s lion populations,” the release stated.

FWP biologists will track and tree mountain lions with trained dogs and use darts to collect small tissue samples to analyze the mountain lion’s genetics. “This will be combined with genetic samples from hunter-harvested lions to help biologists estimate lion numbers,” the release stated.

The mountain lions will not be sedated, collared or tagged during the field work, according to FWP.
