The Gallatin Valley Land Trust has permanently conserved 75,000 acres of agricultural land, wildlife habitat, rivers and open space across Gallatin, Park and Madison counties in southwest Montana.

The milestone comes two years ahead of the nonprofit’s schedule after it set a goal three years ago to protect an additional 25,000 acres within five years amid rising development pressure. GVLT previously took 30 years to conserve its first 50,000 acres.

“We could not have reached this milestone alone. We stand on the shoulders of our founders’ bold dreams and decades of leadership that preceded us,” said GVLT Executive Director Chet Work, in an email to supporters. “Most importantly, we owe this success to our landowner partners who choose to conserve their land and our generous supporters, like you, who help fuel this work.”

Founded in 1990, GVLT has completed 137 conservation easements. The organization currently has 18 projects underway that could conserve more than 20,000 additional acres, including efforts tied to its Northern Yellowstone Open Lands initiative in Park County.
