The Gallatin City-County Health Department issued an advisory Thursday, Aug. 21, regarding harmful algal blooms detected in Hebgen Reservoir in the Rainbow Point Campground area. Anatoxin was found in the water, which can be harmful to people, pets and livestock.
According to a joint press release from GCCHD, Montana Department of Environmental Quality and NorthWestern Energy, ingestion or prolonged contact with dangerous toxins present in HABs may result in illness, with symptoms including muscle twitching, staggering, convulsions, paralysis and death.
“Advisory signs are at public access points in the Rainbow Point Campground area warning the public that toxic algae has been identified in the water in these areas. At this time there are no other identified blooms affecting other areas of the reservoir,” the release stated. “NorthWestern Energy is monitoring the blooms and will provide updates if additional restrictions are implemented for public safety.”
While not all varieties of Montana-native blue-green algae are harmful, the anatoxin found at Hebgen Reservoir can pose a threat to humans from recreational activities where water may be ingested, such as swimming, wind surfing, jet skiing and waterskiing. Pets and children are more likely to ingest toxins especially if they wade in shallow water where algae can accumulate, usually suspended in the water or appearing as floating mats.
The release encouraged citizens to report suspected HABs by calling GCCHD Environmental Health at 406-582-3120.
“If you suspect a HAB-related illness in a person or animal call Poison Control 1-800-222-1222 and seek medical attention,” the release stated.
