Hyalite Canyon Road, the only motor vehicle access point to the popular Hyalite Canyon recreation area, will close at 6 p.m. on March 31 and remain closed to motor vehicles April 1 through May 15, with a scheduled reopening May 16. This closure is enacted annually to protect road infrastructure during the spring thaw, and allows visitors to access the canyon via bike or foot during the area’s quieter season, ahead of a busy summer.
“The six-week period of no traffic in the canyon offers a unique, non-motorized recreational experience that folks enjoy and look forward to each spring,” said Kat Barker, recreation program manager for the Bozeman Ranger District in a March 25 press release from the Custer Gallatin National Forest.
The release advised those using the road for recreational activities to exercise caution and reduce speeds when near maintenance vehicles operating on the road, or around blind corners.
