Marilyn Miller, who served as Montana’s Secretary of the Senate during a 40-plus year career supporting the state legislature, passed away on Jan. 1. She was 83.
In 2023, the Montana Legislature surprised Miller with the passage of Senate Bill 414, which officially designated the Senate leadership offices in the State Capitol as “The Marilyn Miller Senate Suite” including a commemorative plaque. The bill passed the Senate unanimously, 50-0, and “enshrin[ed] her name in the state building commemorations along with the likes of Mike and Maureen Mansfield, Mike Cooney and Jeannette Rankin,” according to 2023 reporting by the Helena Independent Record. She retired in 2025.
A press release from the Montana Senate Republicans included a Jan. 1 statement from Senate President Matt Regier (R-Kalispell).
“Marilyn Miller was part of the institution of the legislature,” Regier stated. “Her gentle strength guided and mentored thousands of lawmakers, staff and visitors over the decades. Our hearts are with her family and grieve that she is no longer with us, but the Senate is grateful for her service and friendship.”
Miller was surrounded by family in her final hours, according to the release.
