Kevin Butler grew up around the real estate and construction industries in South Florida. While studying business and horticulture in college, he started his first landscape company. He moved to Big Sky with his young family in 1999 and has worked in the local real estate and construction industries ever since. In 2022, he partnered with his son, Max, to launch Yellowstone Atlas Contracting, a company focused on landscape design, excavation, site services and snow removal. We spoke with Butler about the family business and what it takes to thrive in an ever-evolving community.
This series is part of a paid partnership with the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce. The following answers have been edited for brevity.
Explore Big Sky: What initially brought you and your family to Big Sky?
Kevin Butler:I first came here in the early ’90s to visit family and immediately fell in love with the culture and the mountains.
EBS: When did you start your business, and what prompted you to do so?
KB: I started Yellowstone Atlas Contracting in 2022 with my son, Max. I had been in real estate and construction for most of my working career. I started my first landscape company in South Florida in my early 20s and have been a real estate broker in Big Sky since 2001. My son had been working locally as a landscaper, so it seemed natural to take the opportunity to work together.
EBS: Can you share a brief overview of some of the services you offer?
KB: We began with landscape design and construction. Numerous requests prompted us to quickly diversify into excavation, site services and commercial and residential snow removal. Our favorite work involves solving difficult problems and helping clients bring ambitious ideas for land and outdoor spaces to life.
EBS: Can you tell us about the team that makes your company successful?
KB: We’re a small crew of multidisciplinary professionals with a wide range of skills and a perfectionist mindset. We’re always looking for new team members who share our passion.
EBS: Do you see growth for your business in the future?
KB: Yes. Big Sky is growing and developing quickly, and we provide services that are in demand and valuable to many people. We’re also set up to respond to new and changing opportunities and needs in the community.
EBS: What is the best thing you’ve found about working with the Big Sky community?
KB: The best thing is the community itself. I’ve watched Big Sky grow and mature since its adolescence. I’ve always appreciated the mountain culture and character of Big Sky, as well as the individuals drawn to this place.
EBS: What is some of the best business advice you’ve ever received?
KB: Don’t take no for an answer, at least the first time. Don’t be afraid to think bigger. And, The customer may not always be right, but they are always the customer.
EBS: What’s your perfect Big Sky day in summer and winter?
KB: In the summer, getting out early and making my way up one of our amazing local peaks for lunch with a view. In the winter, bluebird powder tram laps with family and friends, followed by local music and après. Always good times!
