In the early morning of July 4, Yellowstone National Park officials responded to reports of an armed gunman making threats to civilians at the park’s Canyon Village. On Sept. 19, the National Park Service released footage from an armed confrontation that ensued. The footage was recorded by park rangers on body-worn cameras during the incident.

The shooter, 28-year-old Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner of Milton, Florida, and a Xanterra Parks and Resorts employee, was killed in the confrontation with park rangers.

One ranger was shot in a lower extremity and suffered injuries during the incident.

“Thanks to the heroic actions of our law enforcement rangers, many lives were saved here [on July 4],” Park Superintendent Cam Sholly stated in a July 9 press release. “These rangers immediately confronted this shooter and took decisive action to ensure he was no longer a threat to public safety. We are working now to provide maximum support to those involved and their families. We appreciate the support of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Park Service, Department of the Interior, and many other partners as we continue to manage through the aftermath of this incident.”

The footage can be viewed online, and is accompanied by detailed information to show how the events unfolded. NPS warns viewers: “this video of an officer-involved shooting contains graphic content and strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.”
