Residential and commercial energy code training sessions will be offered Tuesday, June 7 at the Bozeman Grand Tree Inn located at 1325 North 7th Ave. Representatives from the International Code Council (ICC) and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will present fundamental information about the residential and commercial energy codes.

The sessions are free and open to the public. The morning residential session will be conducted from 8 a.m. to noon and the afternoon commercial session from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The afternoon commercial session will be conducted in conjunction with NorthWestern Energy’s Montana Energy Conference on energy efficiency in commercial buildings.

The seminars will provide an overview of critical concepts for the requirements of 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (2009 IECC(r)). These concepts provide a basis for the correct use of the code in the design, plan review, inspection and analysis of projects.

Last year, Montana adopted a new statewide Montana energy code – known as the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (2009 IECC). All plans for new construction, and certain alterations and renovations in the state, must comply with the new code. The IECC was adopted with several amendments specific to Montana and those items will be discussed during the session.

The session will cover major changes with the new code such as: basement insulation requirements, additional air sealing, improved window standards, efficient lighting requirements, air and duct sealing testing options and requirements. Houses designed to the new code should use about 15 percent less energy than a similarly-sized house built to the old code, and should offer more comfort and better resistance to moisture damage.

Preregistration is required. For registration and additional information go to the events calendar at energizemontana.com or go to the registration site: iccsafe.org/Education/Courses/Pages/MT-Energy-Seminars.aspx

Registration for NorthWestern Energy’s Montana Energy Conference and BetterBricks Awards can be accomplished by contacting Betsy Pahut at: betsy.pahut@northwestern.com or by calling (406) 497-2609.

The DEQ makes reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities who wish to participate in this event. If you require an accommodation, please contact Paul Tschida at Montana DEQ, ptschida@mt.gov, or call 406-841-5232.
