Mountain Outlaw magazine expands distribution to Amtrak line

By Joseph T. O’Connor Explore Big Sky Managing Editor

The Outlaw Partners’ flagship publication, Mountain Outlaw magazine, is now on the rail.

The biannual glossy was recently picked up by Amtrak – the National Railroad Passenger Corporation – as the rail service’s in-train magazine on its Empire Builder line running from Chicago, Ill. to Seattle, Wash. and Portland, Ore.

The move incorporates more than 500,000 passengers across the line’s 99 stops, which include Minneapolis, Minn.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Whitefish; and Spokane, Wash. It brings the magazine’s annual readership to a projected 1.6 million.

“It’s a natural fit,” said Outlaw CEO and Publisher Eric Ladd. “Mountain Outlaw has often been compared to inflight magazines, and our content matches well with Amtrak riders. I was blown away at the magnitude of this route, which will introduce our magazine to riders across a six–state region.”

The Empire Builder route carries passengers west from Chicago, yielding sweeping views of the Mississippi River, to a picturesque Minneapolis skyline, then along some of the nation’s most pristine wilderness, including portions of the Lewis and Clark expedition route, as well as Glacier National Park.

Leaving Spokane, travelers can continue to Seattle, or take the route south to Portland through the Columbia River Gorge, while soaking in stunning vistas of Mt. Hood and Beacon Rock.

“Mountain Outlaw magazine has always featured intriguing content from the Greater Yellowstone region, as well as travel stories from the Pacific Northwest and around the world,” said Senior Editor Tyler Allen. “Expanding our content to cover compelling stories from the Midwest to the Cascades – and points in between – is a major opportunity.”

Published in Big Sky, Mountain Outlaw is a full-color glossy magazine with award-winning content and photography that highlights the land, life and culture of the Mountain West. Along with Amtrak’s Empire Builder line from Chicago to points west and back, Mountain Outlaw is distributed in the four corners of Yellowstone National Park, across Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, and direct-mailed to all 50 states.
