Lone Peak High School held its homecoming week Sept. 21-25, fit with its annual homecoming parade and home games for fall sports.
On Friday night, Sept. 25, a crowd of community members, families and students cheered on LPHS football as they played against Park City High School. Ultimately, the Big Horns fell 44-0 to the Panthers.
The Big Horns kept the Panthers at bay going into the second half. With the Panthers leading 14-0, the second half of the game started on a strong note as the Big Horns continually stopped the Panthers on defense. Coming off of an injury, freshman Skye Walkup became a familiar sight for any Park City player carrying the ball down the field.
After the game, senior Lucas O’Connor commended his teammates’ performance in the match, including senior Tayler McVey, senior Boone Jorgenson and senior Townes Laxson. He also shared praise for freshmen like Bryson Cluff and Walkup.
“Skye [Walkup] had a phenomenal second half,” O’Connor said. He noted that despite Walkup’s injury earlier in the season, he practiced with a cast soaking up as much information and training as he could.
“Our freshmen have been kind of stepping up, taking jobs because they have to,” O’Connor said. “We’re down on so many people, so I’m proud of them for that.”
Throughout the game, students in Big Horn blue and white followed the offense and defense up and down the field, punctuating any tackle or reception with cheers.
“It’s amazing,” O’Connor said about the crowd. He encouraged the same kind of attendance at LPHS home games in the future. The next will be senior night on Oct. 23.
Girls volleyball and girls and boys soccer also played homecoming games. First, LPHS volleyball played Ennis High School, and fell 3-0. While the result shows a sweep, a closer look at each game offers a different perspective. In the first match, the Big Horns racked up 21 points against the Mustangs’ 25, and 22 points in the second match.
Back at the Big Horn Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 26, the girls and boys soccer teams played against Park City High School, respectively winning 1-0 and 2-0. In the girls match, freshman Braxtin Clark received an assist from junior Lola Morris to put the ball in the back of the net.
In the boys game, senior Sidney Morris scored off of an assist from senior captain Keegan Lichini. Then, junior Ty Mittelstaedt scored off of an assist from senior Sidney Trulen to put the score at 2-0.
