Yellowstone National Park announced temporary afternoon fishing closures on select rivers and streams beginning Thursday, June 19 due to rising water temperatures and low river flows that pose a serious risk to native trout, according to a June 18 press release by Yellowstone National Park. The closures apply to the Madison, Firehole and Gibbon rivers, along with all of their associated tributaries.
Water temperatures in select rivers and streams have exceeded 68 F and water levels are low. These conditions combined can cause stress to the fish and increase the chance of mortality. Fishing will be prohibited daily from 2 p.m. to sunrise on affected rivers until conditions improve. The water tends to cool overnight, allowing for fishing during the cooler morning hours.
Fishing will remain open on Yellowstone Lake and other lakes, as well as all rivers and streams not listed in the closure, from sunrise to sunset, in accordance with 2025 fishing regulations. Officials urge anglers to fish during the coolest parts of the day and to minimize handling of fish.
