Yellowstone National Park announced in a July 28 news release that fishing closures now apply on all rivers and streams daily from 2 p.m. to sunrise beginning July 29, citing high water temperatures and low stream flows. The restriction is in addition to full fishing closures already in place since July 15 on the Madison, Firehole and Gibbon rivers downstream of Norris Campground. Anglers can still fish other park rivers and streams from sunrise to 2 p.m., and lakes, including Yellowstone Lake, remain open from sunrise to sunset under existing regulations.
Park officials said water temperatures have exceeded 68F in recent days, with many rivers running below long-term average flows, conditions that can be fatal to fish. Staff will continue monitoring conditions and may lift or expand the restrictions depending on how the situation develops.
The park is asking anglers to fish during the coolest parts of the day, land fish quickly, and handle them gently to help protect the fishery.
