Yellowstone National Park’s winter season begins Monday, Dec. 15, allowing visitors oversnow travel in certain sections of the park. Each year from mid-December until mid-March, visitors can enter the park from the West, South, East and North entrances by approved commercially guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches. The Northeast Entrance from Mammoth to Cooke City remains open to cars.
Snow accumulation across the park is varied, explained a Dec. 10 press release, meaning the type of transportation used on park roads by commercially guided snowmobile or snowcoach tour companies will depend on road conditions. Services are limited and lodging reservations must be made in advance. Visitors must be prepared for winter conditions in the park as weather can change quickly.
