Being an entrepreneur can mean long days (and nights), struggle or failure, and big highs and lows. But it’s people who are willing to take these risks – like those featured in this issue’s special Entrepreneurs section – who allow the greater Big Sky-Bozeman business community to grow and thrive.
The EBS editors had a blast putting this section together, but we have to credit our sales director E.J. Daws for the idea. Daws speaks with local and regional business owners daily.
“I like to learn how people and businesses make a living, because there are so many different ways people are successful,” Daws said. “In our part of the world, we have a culture of ‘work hard, play hard,’ and I think a lot of people have started their own business because they want to be able to enjoy Montana.”
Featured entrepreneur Dr. Brett Baker embodies this sentiment entirely. Founder of the Bozeman-based biotech company Microbion Corp., Dr. Baker moved his company to Montana to be closer to Montana State University’s Center for Biofilm Engineering, but it’s likely the proximity to Bridger Bowl didn’t hurt.
“I really encourage people to get involved to solve the problems they think are important,” said Dr. Baker, whose company is working to fight antibiotic-resistant infections.
This passion is the drive. The willingness to work like a mule is what makes it happen. And Montana’s mountains and rivers are what bring us all together.
