The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch and Warning for much of central, southeastern and eastern Montana from Saturday morning through Monday night. Billings is forecast to approach 112F Sunday, which could challenge the city’s all-time record high of 112 F, set July 31, 1901.
A Heat Advisory is also in effect for Big Sky from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening, with highs expected near 90 F Friday and around 97 F Saturday, while Bozeman and the rest of southwest Montana are forecast to peak in the low 90s. Overnight lows will offer little relief, staying in the 70s. With low humidity, gusty winds and dry vegetation, southwest Montana faces elevated wildfire risk this weekend. Check current restrictions at mtfireinfo.org before any burning or campfires.
The Human Resource Development Council announced in a July 10 press release it will activate a Code Red at Homeward Point from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., keeping the Bozeman shelter open during daytime hours rather than its normal 5 p.m. opening to give people experiencing homelessness a safe, air-conditioned space.
“Extreme heat can be just as dangerous as extreme cold for people without stable housing,” said Heather Grenier, HRDC president and CEO in the release. “By opening our doors during the hottest part of the day, we’re simply reducing the risk of heat-related illness for so many community members.”
