A flash flood warning is in effect for the Big Sky area in the Madison and neighboring ranges effective Aug. 27 and 28, according to the National Weather Service. The warning area includes Missouri Headwaters, Madison Valley, the Beaverhead, Madison, Ruby, Gallatin and Centennial mountains, as well as the towns of Virginia City, Harrison, Pony, Sheridan and Ennis.
One to two inches of rainfall is forecasted for Wednesday night, on top of unstable soils from recent burn scars with “the greatest impacts from debris flow possible on the Cloudrest, Bivens Creek and McAllister burn scars,” according to the weather statement.
Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding of low-lying areas. Residents near the recent burn scars across Madison County should prepare for potential flooding impacts.
