BIG SKY – The “Battle of 191” rivalry between Lone Peak High School and West Yellowstone headed to the volleyball court on Oct. 16. The Big Horns took on the Wolverines in front of a packed gymnasium of blue and red clad fans, for the first of two regular season match ups.

Lone Peak jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first set behind the solid serving of senior captain Michelle Burger, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Big Horns were focused in the first set, rattling off points, playing strong at the net, and shutting down West 25-9.

The second set was another Big Horn show with Junior Tehya Braun exploiting the West defense from the outside. Burger served eight points in a row to put the score at 18-9, cementing the lead for Lone Peak who went on to win 25-12.

With the crowd rooting for a shutout, the Big Horns again took control of the game from the outset. This time it was sophomore setter Katie Reid who led the team, serving for 11 points and picking up four kills as Lone Peak went on to take the set 25-14 and take the match 3-0.

The Big Horns notched a season high 27 kills paced by Burger and Braun who notched nine kills apiece. Reid had 18 assists on the night, and Lone Peak scored 10 aces and picked up 16 digs as a team.

“Lone Peak played amazing volleyball tonight and it was truly a team effort,” said Coach Sarah Griffiths after the match. “Our rivalry with West is a great motivator for both teams. It was so awesome to see our team go out and play a spectacular game of volleyball that was just fun to watch.”

The Lone Peak junior varsity volleyball team played tough against West Yellowstone but couldn’t pull out a win. The Big Horns played well in the first set but lost it 17-25 to a hard serving Wolverine team.

West jumped out to a 17–11 lead in the second set, and it looked like the Big Horns were going to give up another set. Lone Peak rallied though, paced by the strong serving of Janie Izzo and Chloee Beardsley, and came back to win 25–21. Sets three and four were back and forth battles, marked by long rallies and great play by the Big Horns, but were ultimately won by the Wolverines to seal the match 3-1.

“Today our team played a hard fought game,” coach Erika Frounfelker said after the match. “We changed up our rotation a little and our team rose to the challenge and played a great game. I am so proud of their hustle and effort they put forth.”
