Rush Hour: Crews to fix problematic highway striping

On Tuesday, crews striped Montana Highway 64 (Lone Mountain Trail) with temporary pavement markings that caused confusion among drivers in certain Big Sky locations. The left-turn lane at Huntley Drive was not marked properly as a turn lane, among other improperly marked lanes that may have caused pinch points or confusion.

After receiving feedback from community members, the public relations firm representing the Montana Department of Transportation responded with a written statement promising that the situation would be fixed as soon as possible.

“MDT is aware of striping changes that have affected travel in the area. We have mobilized crews to repaint and adjust the lines. Crews are awaiting good weather to make these changes and will make these fixes as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and will follow up as soon as this has been resolved,” the statement read.

The affected section of highway has not yet been chip sealed, which is among projects planned for this summer—in the meantime, the striping performed this week was meant to be temporary. Permanent pavement markings will be painted with close attention to the turn lanes and other improvements made as part of the multi-year TIGER grant project.

Recently, representatives outlined plans for this summer, as crews wrap up Big Sky’s TIGER grant work.
