Heavy rainfall has triggered significant flooding across Glacier National Park, prompting multiple temporary closures of roads, trails and facilities. Closures include the entire Many Glacier Valley, including Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and the Many Glacier Campground. Both the hotel and motor inn have been evacuated, according to a June 29 news release from the park, and all trails in the valley are closed until further notice. Commercial boat tours from Glacier Park Boat Company and horseback rides from Swan Mountain Outfitters in the area have also been suspended.
Additionally, Going-to-the-Sun Road, which had been partially closed June 28 from Avalanche to Jackson Glacier Overlook has since shifted to include Rising Sun. No hiker or biker access is allowed past closure points.
The park is asking visitors to avoid closed areas, never attempt to cross flooded sections and check conditions before arriving, as access could change quickly. The National Weather Service has issued a Prolonged Rain and Runoff warning through Tuesday, June 30, with heavy rain in steep terrain raising the risk of rockslides and rapid rises in small streams. Road status updates are available by texting GNPROADS to 333111, or at the park’s website.
