As Montanans prepare to fire up the grill, and watch fireworks and parades to celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend, the Bozeman Police Department and local law enforcement agencies are encouraging residents and visitors to prioritize safety by planning sober rides before the celebrations begin.
Fourth of July is right in the middle of the 100 Deadliest Days, the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic fatalities typically spike—Montana ranks at the top in the nation for traffic fatalities involving an impaired driver, according to a July 2 press release. In response, the Bozeman Police Department is increasing patrols this Fourth of July.
“The Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year,” BPD Captain Hal Richardson stated in the release. “It is imperative to take a few minutes to plan for a sober ride, as it can determine whether your holiday is joyful or tragic. Don’t leave this crucial detail to chance—make the responsible choice for a safe celebration. Please make safe choices: designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or take public transportation. If you see friends or family who have consumed too much, help them find a safe ride. Together, we can prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”
The release reminded revelers that in addition to risking harm or death, there are serious consequences for those arrested for driving under the influence, including a revoked driver’s license, mandatory classes, jail time, $10,000 in fines and legal fees, and consequences with employers or future employment.
“Having even one impaired driver on the road is unacceptable,” Richardson stated. “This year, let’s celebrate Independence Day by ensuring our roads are safe and that everyone returns home to their loved ones.”
