Last month, Gallatin County was awarded a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that will allow Logan Landfill to work with public and private partners to help reduce food waste in the community.

A March 7 press release from the county explained that the grant will go toward expanding the landfill’s biosolids compost operation, and allow the Human Resource Development Council to expand its food rescue operation to include restaurants and more farms. It is estimated that last year alone, 200,000 tons of waste was processed at Logan and based on national averages, it’s estimated that 35,000 to 40,000 tons of that waste is compostable.

“This project will allow us to rescue usable food to feed folks in need in our community, compost food and green waste, and create a beneficial product for local residents and farmers, all while diverting the waste from our landfill,” said Jim Simon, director of the Gallatin Solid Waste Management District, the organization that owns and operates the county’s landfill. “This project is a major win for Gallatin County, and we are excited to work with our partners to get this project underway.”

To start, GSWMD is developing a Covered Aerated Static Pile at Logan for compositing, with the goal of it being operational by spring 2025.
