County Commission to discuss next steps on zoning reform

EBS STAFF

In a recent press release, the Gallatin County Commission announced they will discuss the outcomes of recent community listening sessions on zoning reform during their regular hearing on Tuesday, May 13 at 9 a.m. According to the release, the commission will provide direction to county planning staff on next steps, if any.

In Gallatin County, 74% of private land within the county’s planning jurisdiction is unzoned, leaving large areas open to unpredictable land use changes, the press release stated. In other areas, residents in separate areas have worked hard to create zoning districts to protect what they love about their communities.

Over time, this has resulted in 22 separate districts that function independently, which can be confusing for property owners and creates challenges for making needed updates in a timely fashion for the public due to many redundant steps. To address these challenges, Gallatin County recently held listening sessions to hear from the public on several zoning reform options that could deliver zoning plans that better reflect the needs and values of Gallatin Valley communities.

Community members can attend the May 13 hearing in person in the Community Room at the Gallatin County Courthouse at 311 W. Main St. in Bozeman. A virtual attendance option, meeting materials and a livestream of the meeting are available here.

Public comment is still being accepted and community members can submit feedback online or by participating directly in the hearing on May 13.
